"Future Weaving" was inspired by these two guiding questions: What can we abandon, moving forward? What can we embrace? The project, proposed by drama teacher Nicole “Coco” Roberge, theatre artist Susan Bertoia and natural fibre artist Patti Williams, built on the belief that our collective survival depends on our individual ability to imagine a future where everyone is seen, heard, and valued.
“Future Weaving” involved two Drama 9/10 groups from Riverside Secondary over a month residency with Susan who led a playful ensemble building, in-class devising process culminating in an original, student-centre performance integrating both classes. Our creative physical theatre explorations about how our futures are woven together combined with the traditional indigenous weaving techniques created a unique and empowering piece of theatre full of authentic movement and honest impulses.
